19th Annual General Meeting

The Sri Lanka – Pakistan Business Council held its 19th Annual General Meeting on 27th July 2012 at the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Rohitha Thilakaratne, Managing Director of Merchant Lanka (Pvt) Ltd. was elected as the President of SLPBC for the Year 2012-2013. The two Vice Presidents are Mr. Sega Nagendra of CML-MTD Construction Ltd and Ms. Zahara Cader of Tallman Tours Ltd.

Networking Sessions with Inward Trade Delegations from Pakistan

The Sri Lanka – Pakistan Business Council organised number of networking sessions, meetings and interactive events with the objective of providing an opportunity for the members to interact with delegates visited from Pakistan.

Business Forum with His Excellency the President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan

On the occasion of the visit of His Excellency Asif Ali Zardari, the President of the Islamic Republic Pakistan, a Business Forum was jointly with the Sri Lanka – Pakistan Business Council of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce and the High Commission of the Islamic Republic Pakistan, Colombo on November 29, 2010 at Hilton Colombo.

His Excellency Asif Ali Zardari was accompanied by a High-Powered Delegation interested in developing business links and connects with Sri Lankan business community.

Seminar on “Maximizing Pakistan - Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement”

The Sri Lanka – Pakistan Business Council conducted a Seminar on September 30, 2010 at the Auditorium of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce the above theme.

The Resource personnel included Dr. Saman Kelegama, Executive Director of Institute of Policy Studies, Mr. V. S. Sidath Kumar, Deputy Director General - Commerce of the Department of Commerce and Ms. Mariam Saeed, Charge d’ Affaires of the High Commission of Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

The Sri Lanka – Pakistan Free Trade Agreement was signed in August 2002 and implemented in June 2005. With the growing importance of Economic Development, Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) are considered as a key engine that drives trade between nations. The Seminar was designed to enhance the understanding & recognise opportunities available by optimizing the FTA.

The Seminar was threefold Dr. Kelegama enlighten on how to recognise benefits available by optimizing the FTA and its future prospects while Mr. Sidath Kumar explained key features, objectives and technical aspects and Ms. Saeed identified avenues of enhancing trade between Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
